What to Wear on Top of a Little Black Dress

ways to wear a little black dress, ways to dress up a black dress - My Style Vita @mystylevita

Who else has a million little black dresses but never wears them as often as they really should? I know I'm guilty of it. I've got one just for black tie events, one just for summer, one just for a night out with the girls and so on. I thought this was so silly. For someone who tries (tries but not too hard because you know I love shopping) to be mindful of spending, I thought this could make for a fun tutorial. Showing you how to take one little black dress out for so many different ways. From the office, to the holiday party, to even a festival.

This dress was a solid under $100 find from Topshop. I think the combination of the fabric and neckline help to make it as versatile as it is.  I will be honest, it's atad short in the front where the layers of the dress come together. This doesn't bother me, but I know some offices won't allow such a short piece. I recommend if you're looking for something that truly goes from office, to night to weekend, to first find one that works for the office. One that is the right length and neckline for your office dress code is key.

I worked in a very casual office at Alternative Apparel and this dress probably wouldn't have been an issue. But my first job out of college, this would've had me sent home. So when finding your perfect LBD to wear all the ways, keep your office attire in mind first. I personally also love this short sleeve one, and this long sleeve one that will for sure work for all 6 of these looks as well but are totally 9-5 appropriate. I've found that fit and flare or fitted dresses work best for being as versatile. It allows layers to be added without there being any bunching.

Now, let's get started! Here's my 6 favorite ways to wear a little black dress.

6 WAYS TO STYLE A LITTLE BLACK DRESS

Cocktails With Friends

One of my favorite things to do on the weekends (or really any day of the week) is to get together with some girl friends and grab a drink to catch up. We all travel quite a bit and work long days so we relish in the ability to get a litlte dressed up to get together. The easiest way to dress up a little black dress is with a pretty black heel, bold earrings and a clutch. This is my go to for just about any event too. It's a no fail way to look put together and fashion forward in the latest accessories.

For The Weekend

How you can usually find me on a casual day, simple and comfortable. A denim jacket with chucks is a great way to dress down just about any dress in your closet. For extra style points, add a little bandana around your neck. For cooler weather, add a blanket scarf to stay warm.

Festival Style

Atlanta has tons of festivals. From big music festivals like Music Midtown to neighborhood ones with art, food and community.  This is my usual uniform for events like this. It's comfortable but stylish, my go to.  Booties and a military jacket just go together like peanut butter and jelly in my book. I feel like it's a never fail combination. Whether you want to do a flat boot, or even a full knee high boot, either will work here.

For The Office

Since this dress is a tad short on me (and depending on your office's dress code) add black tights (I love these fleece lined ones for extra warmth) and a perfect little black bag to go with it. Add a long blazer for an extra layer if you need to. I've also added a great chunky cardigan over a LBD for a great 9-5 variation.

Happy Hour

An oversized boyfriend blazer with pumps is a great way to make this dress office friendly that can help take you from office to happy hour and still look stylish and not like you've been sitting at a desk all day.  I've said it before in this post, that a long oversized blazer is a key piece for your wardrobe this season. They're super stylish and very versatile.

Edgy Date Night

This is probably my signature look for going on a date. I'm in love with a leather jacket and I always like to wear a casual boot. To dress it up a tiny bit more, just swap out the bootie for a fun high heel.  Throw your hair up in a big messy topknot for an effortless edgy look.
